SHIPLEY HQ Shipley Do-Nuts has plans to open an “experiential headquarters” at the former Finger Furniture warehouse near the Gulf Freeway at Cullen Boulevard in downtown. The 60,000-square-foot building will house more than 200 Houston-based employees and will serve as a training center for franchisees. It will also feature a drive-thru in the middle of the building that will provide a behind the scenes look at Shipley’s operations.

Celebrated as the first major zoo exhibit to highlight the wildlife of the Pacific archipelago, the Houston Zoo’s immersive Galapagos Islands exhibit is anticipated to open this spring. Located near the entrance of the 55-acre zoo, the Galapagos exhibit will feature sea lions, giant tortoises, sharks and a first for the zoo, Humboldt penguins. The Galapagos Islands exhibit represents the largest initiative in the six-year, multi-phase plan. Felicity Oaks in Upper Kirby is a 120-unit development located on 4041 Richmond Avenue in District G. The Upland near the Memorial City area is a 165-unit located at 1430 Upland Drive in District A. The new master-planned development, Fulshear Lakes is set to become the next great attraction of Fort Bend County. This new development will provide a lifestyle that highlights the beauty of the great outdoors, nature, and convenience with highly rated LCISD’s newest elementary school on-site. On narrow lots where they do build driveways accessing the street, developers also must set garages 20 feet back from the street. That provision is designed to ensure that trucks, SUVs and other large vehicles parked on the driveways do not block sidewalks. City officials worked out a last-minute compromise with developers that places new limits on when and how those “frontloader” houses can be built, however, including an outright ban in 10 neighborhoods.

The $2.5 billion plan calls for a slew of projects that include apartments, office space, restaurants, retail shops and medical and entertainment buildings. The development will span a mile along the waterfront on the north shore of Buffalo Bayou. Midway broke ground on the project, which is being built in five phases, last year. The first phase is expected to finish completion in 2023; the entire project could take 15 to 20 years.

HOUSTON ZOO EXPANSION The Houston Zoo’s $70-million state-of-the-art exhibit, “Galápagos Islands” was originally scheduled to open in 2022. But supply chain issues have disrupted construction, and the project is now expected to debut in early 2023.
